The Amazon Impact: the ongoing evolution and disruption of the retail market, both online and in physical outlets, resulting from increased e-commerce.

Through an interactive infographic, this project is the story of Amazon’s major points of growth in the company within the last few decades for entrepreneurs and business enthusiasts.

Amazon accounted for 4% of US retail sales and 44% of US e-commerce sales in 2017

Tech Stocks, Investopia

Amazon is the largest e-commerce marketplace and cloud computing platform in the world. Due to my topic surrounding the history of one of the largest global corporations, it’s important that my target audience reflect those who would be interested in business and global communication.

The visualization mode of this infographic is temporal, based on Amazon’s history from 1997–2019. Within the timeline, I broke down the information into 3 major themes for each year; Amazon events, Jeff Bezos’ activity, and technological advancements.

Timeline Components

  1. An introduction showcasing statistical data of Amazon’s growth over time
  2. A timeline breakdown
  3. Highlights of influential events that contributed to Amazon’s development
  4. A comparison of Jeff Bezos’ net worth and Amazon’s share price along the main timeline
  5. A detailed description of progression within Amazon and the tech industry for each year

In the data summary for each year, the information is categorized into three main sections; statistical data of Amazon’s analytics that year, a brief summary of important events for Amazon, and a yearly analysis of Jeff Bezos’ personal accomplishments, his innovations, and important technological developments.

Key Takeaways

This infographic piece was an eye-opener in learning how to effectively hide complex details in minimal design. It was challenging to build a cohesive relationship between each aspect of the piece, but sectioning off major groups created a structure to the narrative.
